Five Days Workshop on the “Development of Hyolmo Language and the determination of orthography for the Hyolmo Language”
Hyolmo Foundation has successfully concluded five days workshop (12th June to 16 June 2016) on the theme “Development of Hyolmo Language and the determination of orthography for the Hyolmo Language” The workshop was organized by Hyolmo Foundation and is sponsored by Himali Indigenous Society, Nepal (HIS).
It is matter of a satisfaction that the draft proposal of the orthography in Hyolmo language has been lunched at the concluding session by a group of personalities collectively. During the five days workshop a prominent linguistic expert Dr. Netra Mani Rai from SIL International played a vital role as a facilitator to determine the orthography for the Hyolmo Language. At the beginning of two days linguistic expert Mrs Mari Sisco Khadgi from SIL International guided the participant in the process of determining the orthography in Hyolmo Language. Similarly, Linguist Mrs Chhing Chipa Lhomi from HIS Nepal has also provided her expertise in the formation of Hyolmo tone in Devanagri script. Language development software specialist Mr Diwakar Shrestha has provided his technical expertise to document the orthography in Hyolmo language.
Prior to the starting of the workshop the participant discussed about the use of letters for the orthography of Hyolmo Language and ultimately decided to use the Devnagari script for the time being. However, an understanding has been made to take initiative even to use Uchen script for the orthography of Hyolmo Language in future. While discussing about the selection of script all the participants were with the view that without introducing Uchen script, it is not possible to write Hyolmo words appropriately in other scripts.
The opening session was chaired by the Chairperson of Hyolmo Foundation Mr. Nima Lama Hyolmo and the closing session was chaired by the Chief advisor Mr. Binod Lama Hyolmo. The workshop was conducted by the General Secretary Mr. Tashi Lama Hyolmo. During the five days workshop Mr. Dawa Jyaba Hyolmo, Advisor of Foundation played an important role to choose Devanagari letters for the Hyolmo orthography and words which are proximity to Hyolmo pronunciation. Hyolmo Foundation has uploaded this short report along with pictures of the workshop. The detail report will be updated within few days.

Thanks goes to Nepal Hyolmo Society Service Association for providing the office hall of the association for five consecutive days to conduct the workshop.
The Hyolmo Foundation would also like to inform to all the Hyolmo indigenous people and Hyolmo Language speaker that the orthography determined by the workshop is not final. It is just a draft proposal, so the Foundation request all the concerned to provide valuable suggestion for the further improvement of the Hyolmo orthography and language.
